Roadkill
Singapore, 2022

The Roadkill series was made in response to bike-riding expeditions in Singapore. My aim was to record the sensation of moving over the road surface - looking forward, looking down. Whilst photographing the road (with my phone attached to the handlebars) I noticed how the camera struggled to focus. The photographs had a gritty, noisy blur.  I devoted considerable time drawing and experimenting with print techniques to explore this. It’s remarkable how much stuff is left lying beside the road – bits of beaten metal, plastic and rubber and most notably, workman’s gloves. Back in the studio I started drawing these abandoned, fragile forms. I began to consider them as figures; twisting, turning and tearing into shreds.
