Ladakh

Himalayas, 2006 - 2018

This is arguably my richest vein of artwork. On two occasions I went trekking at high altitude (5000m) in the Himalayas. I was struck by the cuboids of purple rock that were sprawled like fallen Jenga blocks over the exposed peaks. At the time I made no visual recordings, such was my depleted physical state, but I stuffed my pockets with little shards of stone. Back in the studio I played with these micro-splinters. I found a method of making inter-locking angular marks with pencils that began to reflect the arduous experience. Some of the artworks are torn or broken – bringing the geological process of building and breaking to my artwork – or was it just frustration?
